Which Brands Make the Best Tires?

When it comes to tire recommendations, there are several brands that regularly rise to the top. To determine how the leaders truly compare, we calculated a brand score by averaging the overall scores of the tested models for each brand (the scale ranges from 0 to 100).

This data come from our extensive tire test program, which provides detailed ratings on 176 tire models from more than 25 brands.

The tires factored into these scores come from all rated categories, including all-season and performance all-season car tires, ultra-high-performance (UHP) all-season and UHP summer tires, all-season and all-terrain truck tires, winter/snow car and truck tires, and performance winter/snow tires.

We excluded tire brands if we tested fewer than four of their tires. The final scores here reveal just how competitive the market is, with little difference among the leaders. It’s important for tire shoppers to understand how the tires rank in a given category and to consider how a tire model performs. (Learn how to choose the right tires for your car.)

Consumer Reports tests more than 50 tire models every year—for cars, SUVs, and trucks—putting them through their paces in up to 14 tests. Most tests are conducted by an expert team at our 327-acre Auto Test Center in Connecticut.

We test braking on ice at a local rink, and an outside lab assesses tire rolling resistance, which affects fuel economy. We evaluate tread life by driving thousands of miles on a road course in western Texas and use that information, along with the price we paid for the tire, to estimate the cost per 100 miles.

Our tests measure performance in braking, comfort, handling, hydroplaning, noise, snow traction, and other important areas. Plus, we can predict the tread life in miles based on our extensive treadwear test program. This combined information can help you find the best tires for your car from brands including BFGoodrichBridgestoneContinentalCooperDunlopFalkenFirestoneGeneralGoodyearGT  RadialHankookKumhoMichelinNexenNittoNokianPirelliSumitomoToyoUniroyal, and Yokohama.

Find the Best Tires for Your Car

Buying guide hero image

Find the Best Tires for Your

When the rubber meets the road, tread life is one of the most important things to consider while shopping for tires.

All-Season Tires

All-season tires come in sizes to fit everything from small cars to light-duty SUVs and pickups (and they come standard on many sedans and minivans). They are the most popular type of tire and are designed to handle most conditions, including dry and wet pavement and light to moderate snow.

Performance All-Season Tires

Performance all-season tires provide year-round grip tuned for enthusiastic driving. They are a step up from regular all-season tires, and they place more emphasis on handling, though the trade-off tends to be shorter tread life.

Ultra-High-Performance All-Season Tires

All-season ultra-high-performance tires are commonly fitted to upscale sedans or sporty vehicles. These tires deliver high levels of dry and wet grip and handling but give up some light-duty winter traction.

Ultra-High-Performance Summer Tires

Summer UHP tires are not intended for cold weather and won’t grip in snowy or icy conditions. And like all-season ultra-high-performance tires these tires deliver the ultimate dry and wet grip and handling.

All-Season Truck Tires

These tires are commonly used on SUVs and light-duty pickups. They are designed to handle most conditions, including dry and wet pavement and light to moderate snow.

All-Terrain Truck Tires

All-terrain models differ from all-season tires in that they have a more aggressive tread pattern intended for use on-road and in moderate off-road conditions.

Winter/Snow Tires

Winter tires have a tread with more biting edges for better grip on snow and ice than all season tires, and many have a softer rubber compound that remains flexible in extremely cold temperatures.

Performance Winter/Snow Tires

Performance winter tires have higher levels of snow and ice grip and keep some of the handling and cornering capabilities of the performance tires they replace, but they’re not always as good as all-season tires on dry and wet pavement and tend to wear out faster.

Winter/Snow Truck Tires

Truck winter/snow tires are specifically designed for pickups and SUVs. Like car winter/snow tires, always use truck winter/snow tires in a set of four for optimum grip to go, stop, and corner.  But on cleared roads they might not grip as well as all-season tires, and they tend to wear more quickly.

Tires Buying Guide

Despite advances in longer-lasting tires, actual tread life will vary by car type, tire type, driving aggressiveness, and even road and weather conditions. You still need to replace your tires a few times or more throughout the life of a typical vehicle.

Tire Tips

Tire Tips

Tire

How To Inspect a Tire

Once every month, or before you embark upon long road trips, check your tires for wear and damage problems. One easy way to check for wear is by using the penny test. All you have to do is grab an Abraham Lincoln penny and follow 3 easy steps:

Tire

  • Take a penny and hold Abe’s body between your thumb and forefinger.
  • Select a point on your tire where tread appears the lowest and place Lincoln’s head into one of the grooves.
  • If any part of Abe Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, you’re driving with the legal and safe amount of tread. If your tread gets below that (approximately 2/32 of an inch), your car’s ability to grip the road in adverse conditions is greatly reduced.

How to Check Tire Pressure

Tires have been known to lose up to 1psi (pounds per square inch) every month, so check all tires, including your spare, once a month (or before a long trip). It’s easy. Here’s how:

Tire

Purchase a trusted tire pressure gauge.

Check your tires “cold” – before you’ve driven or at least three hours after you’ve driven.

  • Insert tire pressure gauge into the valve stem on your tire. The gauge should begin reading the air pressure immediately. Refer to your air pressure gauge owners manual for correct usage instructions. If using a “pencil” style tire gauge, the gauge will “pop” out and show a measured number. When you hear a “pssst” sound, that’s air escaping the tire. The escaping air shouldn’t affect pressure substantially, unless you hold down the air pressure gauge too long.
  • Compare the measured psi to the psi found on the sticker inside the driver’s door of your vehicle or in owner’s manual. DO NOT compare to the psi on your tire’s sidewall.
  • If your psi is above the number, let air out until it matches. If below, add air. Low pressure can lead to tire damage.

Mixing in new tires with worn tires

When replacing two new tires instead of four, be sure that your new tires are the same size and tire type as your current tires, and that your dealer always installs the new tires on the rear axle of your vehicle. For continued optimized vehicle performance, it is recommended that all tires be replaced at the same time with identical MSPN.

Tire

Deeper tread tires on the rear axle provide better handling, wet grip, and evacuate water, thereby helping to avoid over steer and loss of vehicle stability on wet surfaces. Deeper tread tires on the front axle can improve wet straight line braking and stopping distance. If only two tires are being replaced, generally recommends they be installed on the rear axle in the absence of a tire service professional’s recommendation or consumer’s preference to the contrary.

Replacing a single tire on a vehicle can have an adverse effect on suspension systems, gear ratios, transmissions, and tire tread wear. If a single tire replacement is unavoidable, it is recommended that the single new tire be paired with the deepest tread tire from the vehicle (including the full size spare) and both be placed as a pair.

Tire Rotation

Fact: Regular rotation helps extend the life of your tires and improve performance. So if you like safety and saving money regular rotation is important for vehicles with dual rear wheels as well.

Tire

During rotation, each tire and wheel is removed from your vehicle and moved to a different position to ensure that all tires wear evenly and last longer. Tires should be rotated every six months or 6,000 to 8,000 miles.

BINGO Charlotte Tire Maintenance Tips

BINGO Charlotte Tire Maintenance Tips! Learn about tire maintenance and find more info about why is regular tire maintenance important!

Tire Maintenance tips

1) Regular Tire Rotation:

The weight of a vehicle is not evenly distributed to all four tires; therefore, regular tire rotation is necessary to maintain even tread wear and get the most out of your tires. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacture’s rotation recommendations. If no rotation period is specified, tires should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. Four-wheel-drive vehicles may require rotation as often as every 4,000 miles.

 2) Tire Maintenance: Taking care of your investment:

Proper tire maintenance is the key to maximizing the life of your tires. It is recommended that you have your tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. This helps equalize tread wear. It is also important to check tire pressure once a month and more often during the winter – as the temperature drops, so does the pressure in your tires. According to the EPA*, properly inflated tires are safer and more fuel efficient.  read more at: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/maintain.shtml

3) Avoid Treacherous Potholes:

In many areas, the repeated freezing and thawing of moisture during winter seeps through road surfaces and produce treacherous potholes in spring. Hitting a pothole can throw your car’s front end out of alignment. Damage to your tire and/or the metal wheel of your vehicle can occur when you hit a pothole. The impact on tires increases dramatically depending on the speed at which your vehicle travels. For these reasons, it is best to avoid potholes entirely. If that’s not possible, avoid braking during pothole impact. Less severe damage occurs when a tire rolls over a pothole than when it skids during braking.

4) How You Know That You Need New Tires:

Checking your tread depth frequently is important, ideally every 3,000 miles. You can do this simply with a penny. Insert the penny into the tread groove, upside down, Lincoln facing you. If you are able to see all of Lincoln’s head, you need new tires. Checking tread depth provides the opportunity to plan ahead and budget for inevitable tire replacement. Remember to check if your current tire is under warranty before making a purchase.

5) Driving Safely:

Take five minutes every month and before every long drive to check your tires, including your spare. Your tires can help keep you safe if you use correctly and allow them to do the job they were designed for. Avoid making sudden movement with your car. Accelerate gently and make turns gradually. Go easy on the brakes when stopping. Spinning or sliding tires mean your vehicle is out of control. If you do go into a skid and your car has an anti-lock braking system (ABS), apply steady pressure to the brakes and turn in the direction of the skid. Do not pump the brakes.

6) Proper Inflation Information:

Maintaining proper air pressure is the single most important service drivers can do for their tires. In just one month, a tire can lose 10 pounds of air pressure. Underinflation causes increased tread wear on outside edges of the tire. It also generate excessive heat, which reduce tire durability and fuel economy. Overinflation causes the center of the tread to bear the majority of the car’s weight, which will shorten the lifespan of your tires. Check your pressure at least once a month. To find the proper air pressure for your tires, look in the vehicle owner’s manual, on the driver’s side door jamb or in the glove box.

7) When A Tire Should Be Replaced:

It is crucial to know when it is okay to have a tire repaired and when a tire should be replaced. If a tire loses its air pressure, it must be removed from the wheel for a complete internal inspection to be sure it is not damaged. Tires that are run even a short distance while flat are often damaged beyond repair. DO NOT repair tires with tread punctures larger than 1/4″ or any sidewall puncture.

8) Find The Right Tire For You:

Tires are designed to deliver different benefits for different vehicles; the more you know about them, the better equipped you’ll be to choose the tire that’s right for you. The most important information about tire buying is printed right on the sidewall. Look on the side of your tire and jot down the numbers you see. Also, take note of what you like and what you may dislike about your current tires (for instance: smooth ride, noise level, handling, etc.) Having this information when you speak to a tire dealer (BINGO TIRES Charlotte) will help you get the tire that is right for your vehicle.

9) Save Money And Gas While Traveling:

Worried about your gas mileage and the cost of traveling this season? How would you like to improve your gas mileage every time you fill up? One of the fastest, easiest and least expensive ways to improve gas mileage and performance is through proper tire inflation which can maximize fuel economy and efficiency. The recommended pressure number for your vehicle is located on a sticker inside the driver’s side door or in the owner’s manual; not the maximum inflation pressure stamped on the tire.

10) Visual Tire Inspection:

Discovering potential problems for your tires is as simple as giving them a good visual once-over. Scan your treads for any sharp objects that may have punctured your tires. Check the wear patterns on your treads as well. Excessive shoulder wear can indicate underinflation, while wear to the center of the tread can mean overinflation. Many tires have tread wear indicator bars molded into the tread. When the tread is worn down to where you can see a solid bar of rubber across the width of your tread, it is time to replace your tire. At any sign of potential problems, be sure to take your vehicle to a tire retailer near you (BINGO TIRES Charlotte) for expert service from trained tire technicians.

11) Importance Of Tire Balance And Alignment:

Having your tires balanced and your vehicle properly aligned is important, not only for the longevity of the tires, but for the safety of the driver and passengers, and performance. Tires should be balanced when they are mounted on wheels for the first time or when they are remounted after a repair. They should be rebalanced at the first sign of a vibration or shimmy, and should be balanced at least once a year, regardless. Proper alignment is necessary for even tread wear and precise steering.

12) Driving Safely In Winter:

In many parts of the country, winter brings a new set of rules to the road. Should you become stuck, avoid spinning your tires, which can overheat them, causing tire failure and possible injury. The correct way to get out of snow is to gently rock your vehicle back and forth. If your vehicle has ABS brakes, follow the instructions in your owner’s manual. Don’t become overconfident when driving a 4-wheel-drive in snow, as it cannot help you stop better, nor can it keep you from skidding.

Top Ten Tire Safety Tips

Tires have been a vehicle’s most important safety feature for more than 100 years. After all, they are a vehicle’s only contact with the road. Even the brawniest engine, strongest brakes, and most advanced anti-skid system are at the mercy of the tire’s grip on the road.

1. Check tire pressures and adjust at least once a month.

2. Inspect tires regularly for abnormal wear or damage.

3. Rotate tires every 6,000 miles or according to owner’s manual.

4. Maintain tires in proper balance.

5. Maintain steering and suspension in proper alignment.

6. Never overload a tire.

7. Avoid overheating tires.

8. Replace tires when required.

9. Install tires in matched pairs or complete sets.

10. Select the right tires for your vehicle and driving environment.

All new vehicles and light task trucks 10,000 lbs or much less have tire stress keeping track of systems required by legislation. When one or even more of the motor vehicle’s tires are 25 percent or more listed below the recommended inflation stress, the tire pressure keeping an eye on device could discover.

Baseding on NHTSA, under-inflated tires can negatively have an effect on gas economic situation, lead to skidding and reduction of control and hydroplaning on wet surfaces. It could additionally boost quiting range and the probability of tire failures.

Tire pressure keeping track of devices are not suggested to be utilized as substitute for performing regular upkeep such as checking for tire pressure consistently. Even the most effective tire-pressure displays can not make up completely for bad tire maintenance. Here’s the best ways to assist keep your tires as safe as feasible:.
